Polyethylene foam (PE foam) is an incredibly versatile plastic product that frequently does not get enough credit for its importance. That could be because many people do not understand its complex structure or any of its amazing properties. There are actually many types of foam. Some have open or closed cells, which differentiate them from each other. PE foam happens to be a kind of foam that has closed cells. This makes it water tight and weigh very little. Being a closed cell foam means each piece of it is actually covered in a large inner and outer surface area that is composed of so many encased bubbles that they are impossible to count. The bubbles are what contribute to its surprising strength and ability to protect products that are encased in it. This is why it can be used in so many different ways.

 

 

How Polyethylene Can be Used

 

PE foam won’t mold, mildew, or rot. It takes a very long time to biodegrade in comparison with other plastics, and it comes in many different colours. Some specially treated kinds of it are even fire resistant. These unique features allow it to be used for more than just protecting products during shipping. The air filled bubbles inside it make it easily float on water, so it is perfect for flotation devices and children’s pool toys. Sheets of it are often used as light weight insulation in the construction of homes and other buildings. It is added as an inexpensive spacer material in cement work, and sometimes it also gets used as a moulding material for other types of low temperature materials that are poured in to it. Polyethylene foam is also a great shock absorber, and it is grease and oil resistant, so sometimes industrial mats are made from it.
